MAJOR INDUSTRY MOVES: Walter Thomas Elevated to EVP at Motown Gospel & TAMLA; Provident Entertainment Claims Top Label Honor Again
The gospel and Christian music industry is celebrating significant achievements as two major announcements reshape the landscape of faith-based entertainment.
Walter Thomas Promoted to Executive Vice President
Capitol Music Group has announced the promotion of Walter Thomas to Executive Vice President of Motown Gospel and TAMLA Records, marking a pivotal milestone for one of the most impactful divisions in faith-based music. The promotion comes during a period of unprecedented momentum for both legendary labels.
In his expanded role, Thomas will oversee the creative, marketing, and strategic direction for Motown Gospel and TAMLA, strengthening partnerships and championing world-class talent across Gospel, Christian, R&B, and positive music.
“Walter Thomas is one of the most forward-thinking executives in music today,” said Tom March, CEO of Capitol Music Group. “His leadership has driven incredible growth, creative excellence, and cultural impact across Motown Gospel and TAMLA. This promotion reflects not only what he’s accomplished, but the extraordinary future ahead under his vision.”
Brad O’Donnell, President of Capitol Christian Music Group, added, “Walter is an exceptional leader with a strong work ethic and clear vision. Working alongside him over the past few years, I’ve seen firsthand his passion for artist development and the role faith plays in his leadership. Motown Gospel and TAMLA are entering a new era of growth and impact under his leadership.”
Thomas expressed his gratitude for the advancement: “This promotion is a reflection of our team’s relentless dedication and the extraordinary artists who trust us with their voices. Motown Gospel and TAMLA are home to some of the most impactful storytellers of our time. I’m honored to help lead our next era — one built on innovation, cultural relevance, and music that inspires the world.”
Record Year for Motown Gospel and TAMLA
Thomas’s promotion comes on the heels of remarkable achievements for both labels in 2025. Tasha Cobbs Leonard’s latest album “Tasha,” which includes the No. 1 single “Church” featuring John Legend, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. The project earned a Grammy nomination for best gospel album.
Other artists across the labels’ rosters who earned Grammy nominations for the 2026 ceremony include Tye Tribbett (best gospel album), Pastor Mike Jr., and Jonathan McReynolds. The latter two are nominated for best gospel performance/song alongside Leonard.
TAMLA Records, originally founded by Berry Gordy in 1959 as the precursor to Motown Records, was relaunched by Thomas in 2024 as “the new home of positive music.” The roster includes a partnership with Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Rodney Jerkins’ EVOLVE Music Group and Dove Award-nominated artist Lee Vasi, who is also a 2026 NAACP Image Award nominee for outstanding new artist.
Provident Entertainment Maintains Top Position
In other major industry news, Provident Entertainment has been named Billboard’s Top Christian Label for the second consecutive year, continuing its reign as one of the industry’s leading homes for faith-based music. The Sony Music Entertainment division also secured honors as Top Christian Albums Label and Hot Christian Songs Label.
The achievement comes alongside an outstanding collection of Billboard Year-End accolades across multiple charts. Provident artists dominated the rankings, with Brandon Lake earning recognition as Hot Christian Songs Artist, Christian AC Airplay Artist, Christian Airplay Artist, Christian Digital Song Sales Artist, and Christian Streaming Songs Artist.
His hit single “Hard Fought Hallelujah” claimed the #1 Hot Christian Song position, while also topping the Christian Digital Song Sales and Christian Streaming Song charts. The song even crossed over to claim the Rock Digital Song Sales chart.
Elevation Worship, another Provident powerhouse, was named Top Christian Duo/Group and Top Christian Artist. Their album “CAN YOU IMAGINE?” earned Top Christian Album honors, while their collaboration “Praise” (featuring Brandon Lake, Chris Brown & Chandler Moore) dominated as the #1 Christian Streaming Song, #1 Christian Airplay Song, and #1 Christian AC Airplay Song.
Rising star Seph Schlueter’s “Running Back To You” claimed the Christian AC Airplay Title, demonstrating the label’s ability to develop emerging talent alongside established artists.
