A Season of Physical Challenges The award-winning artist’s health journey intensified in January 2024 when he underwent a double knee replacement surgery. The procedure carried heavy emotional weight for Hammond, who revealed that his own father had passed away from complications following the same surgery decades prior.

While recovering from the knee procedures, Hammond faced another setback on June 27, 2024, when he suffered a severe fall while attending a funeral service. The incident complicated his rehabilitation, leaving him reliant on a wheelchair and walkers for a season—an experience he described as one of the most “physically and emotionally taxing” of his life.

“I’ve been to the army, boot camp, jumped out of airplanes… but having to be in a wheelchair and learning to walk again has been the most taxing experience,” Hammond shared regarding the rehabilitation process.

Turning a Corner The road to recovery continued into 2025. In April of that year, Hammond underwent an arthroscopy and a right total hip replacement. By the summer of 2025, he marked the one-year anniversary of his fall, candidly admitting he was about “50% recovered” at that time but was grateful to be on the mend.

Following the hip procedure, Hammond reported significant improvements, noting he was “walking much better with no pain”.
