Celebrating Gospel Music’s Birthdays: A Week of Honoring Ministry Leaders
Week of January 12, 2026
This week marks a special season of celebration in gospel music as we honor several iconic artists whose birthdays fall within this remarkable seven-day span. From contemporary Christian music to hip-hop gospel, jazz, and powerful ministry, these artists have shaped the landscape of worship and inspiration for millions worldwide.
Today’s Birthday: Jeremy Camp Turns 48
Leading our birthday celebration is contemporary Christian music powerhouse Jeremy Camp, who celebrates his 48th birthday today, January 12, 2026. Born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1978, Camp has established himself as one of the most impactful voices in gospel and Christian music over nearly two decades.
An Impressive Career Legacy
Between 2002 and 2024, Camp has released 13 studio albums, five of them RIAA-certified as Gold. With 46 No. 1 singles across all Christian formats (Contemporary Hit Radio, Hot AC, Rock, and Inspirational charts), over 7 million albums sold, and more than 4 billion streams, Camp has made an indelible mark on Christian music.
Just last month, in December 2024, Camp was honored with six RIAA Gold-certified singles, including “Walk By Faith,” “Overcome,” “Same Power,” “Christ In Me,” “Keep Me In The Moment,” and “Dead Man Walking.”
Throughout his career, Camp has earned five GMA Dove Awards, a Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album, three American Music Award nominations, four ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Awards, and was named Billboard’s #2 Christian Artist of the Decade.
His journey has been marked by both profound loss and redemptive hope. After his first wife, Melissa, passed away from cancer just three and a half months into their marriage, Camp wrote some of his most powerful songs, including “I Still Believe” and “Walk By Faith”—songs that became sources of comfort for countless believers. His life story was depicted in the 2020 film “I Still Believe,” which hit #1 at the box office.
Belated Birthday Wishes
Helen Baylor – January 8 (72 Years Young)
We send belated birthday wishes to gospel legend Helen Baylor, who turned 72 on January 8th. Born Helen LaRue Lowe in 1954 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Baylor’s journey from secular nightclub performer to gospel powerhouse is a testimony to God’s redemptive grace.
After opening for legends like Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and B.B. King in her teens, and performing in the musical “Hair,” Baylor struggled with drug abuse in the 1980s. Her transformation came when she became sober, strengthened her Christian faith, and launched a gospel music career that would make her one of the genre’s most beloved voices.
Her first five gospel albums all hit the Top Ten of the U.S. Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, with 1994’s “The Live Experience” reaching #1. Her song “Sold Out” won a Dove Award for Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year at the 25th GMA Dove Awards in 1994.
Canton Jones – January 9 (49th Birthday)
Hip-hop gospel pioneer Canton Jones celebrated his 49th birthday on January 9th. Born Canton Dorrelle Jones in 1977 in Deerfield Beach, Florida, Jones has been a trailblazer in Christian hip-hop for over two decades.
A two-time Grammy-nominated artist, Jones began singing at age five in a vocal group founded by his father and was writing and producing original material by age 16. As a member of Morehouse College’s Glee Club, he performed at the 1996 Olympic Games and delivered the first gospel concert ever at the Pentagon.
His breakthrough came with an appearance on the Grammy-nominated compilation album “Holy Hip Hop: Taking Gospel to the Streets”, and his 2005 album “Love Jones” debuted at #11 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. Jones continues to push the boundaries of 21st-century gospel with his Kingdom Business series and serves alongside his wife at Forward City Church.
Ben Tankard – January 10 (62nd Birthday)
Gospel jazz legend Ben Tankard, affectionately known as the “Godfather of Gospel Jazz,” celebrated his 62nd birthday on January 10th. Born in 1964 in Daytona Beach, Florida, Tankard’s journey from professional basketball to gospel music royalty is nothing short of miraculous.
After a career-ending basketball injury dashed his NBA dreams, Tankard discovered his musical calling at a Pentecostal revival service. Without ever taking a formal music lesson or learning to read a note, he became the best-selling gospel jazz instrumentalist and producer in the world with over 1.5 million in worldwide sales.
Tankard has earned 12 Stellar Awards and multiple Dove and Grammy nominations. He won the Stellar Award for Best Instrumental Album in 2010 for “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and was nominated by the Soul Train Music Awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Artist in 2012.
Perhaps most significantly, Tankard discovered third-grade teacher Yolanda Adams, signed her to his Tribute label, and produced her breakthrough albums including “Through the Storm” and “More Than A Melody”. The duo collaborated on over 40 compositions, establishing both as gospel music royalty.
Birthday Wishes Ahead
Dr. Juanita Bynum – January 16 (Turning 67)
This Thursday, January 16th, we celebrate the birthday of powerhouse prophetess and gospel singer Dr. Juanita Bynum, who turns 67. Born in 1959 in Chicago, Illinois, Bynum has become one of the most prominent Black female television evangelists in the country, according to The New York Times.
Dr. Bynum rose to prominence with her groundbreaking 1997 sermon “No More Sheets” at Bishop T.D. Jakes’ “Woman, Thou Art Loosed!” Conference, which created a space for Black women to discuss their sexuality at a time when many Christian ministries avoided the subject. The sermon, released as a video, attracted millions of viewers.
As a gospel recording artist, Bynum released the RIAA-certified platinum album “A Piece of My Passion” in 2006, which reached No. 55 in the Billboard 200 charts. She has been nominated for several Stellar and Dove Awards and received the Thomas Dorsey Award for being a trailblazer in the gospel music community.
As president of Juanita Bynum Ministries and CEO of Juanita Bynum Enterprises, Dr. Bynum continues to inspire men and women around the world as a New York Times bestselling author, empowerment coach, and platinum recording artist.
Travis Greene – January 17 (Turning 42)
Gospel sensation Travis Greene celebrates his 42nd birthday on Friday, January 17th. Born Travis Montorius Greene in 1984 in Delaware, Greene’s life is a testimony to God’s miraculous power—he was born still but resuscitated, and at age four survived a fall from a four-story building in Germany.
Greene began his music career in 2007 with “The More” and has since become one of the biggest gospel music artists in the world. His 2015 album “The Hill” reached #1 on the Billboard Gospel charts, and his hit song “Intentional” became a number one hit on the Billboard Top Gospel Songs chart.
With five Grammy nominations, 13 Stellar Awards, Dove Awards for Song of the Year and Worship Album of the Year, and five number-one singles, Greene has established himself as a powerhouse in contemporary gospel music. He serves as the main pastor and founder of Forward City Church in Columbia, South Carolina, alongside his wife Jackie.
At the 2017 Stellar Awards, Greene took home seven awards, including Song of the Year for “Made a Way” and Male Vocalist of the Year.
