The Foundation: A Musical and Spiritual Upbringing in the Winans Dynasty
To understand the extraordinary ministry of gospel legend BeBe Winans, one must first look to his foundation: the legendary Winans family of Detroit, Michigan. Long before he became a global icon, Benjamin “BeBe” Winans was nurtured in a home where faith was the cornerstone and music was the language of worship. This powerful combination of spiritual devotion and artistic excellence, instilled by his parents, created the fertile ground from which his world-changing career would grow.
The Legendary Winans Family
Often celebrated as “the first family of gospel music,” the Winans name is synonymous with transcendent vocal talent and unwavering faith. Rooted deeply in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), patriarch and matriarch David “Pop” and Delores “Mom” Winans raised their ten children to serve God with their gifts. From the groundbreaking quartet The Winans to the iconic duo BeBe & CeCe, the family’s collective impact is immeasurable, establishing a dynasty of gospel royalty that has inspired millions.
Early Steps in Faith and Music
The Winans household was a constant symphony of praise. BeBe’s earliest musical experiences were not in a recording studio but in the church, singing alongside his siblings under the watchful eyes of his parents. These formative years, detailed throughout the story of BeBe Winans’ life and career, were not just about learning harmonies; they were a spiritual education in the power of anointed music. Every performance was a lesson in ministry, preparing him for a stage far bigger than he could have imagined.
This upbringing was the perfect crucible to forge the artist and minister the world knows today. It blessed BeBe Winans with a profound understanding that music was more than entertainment—it was a divine calling, a powerful tool for hope, and a direct line to the heart of God.
The Iconic Duo: BeBe & CeCe Winans Take the World by Storm
While the enduring solo ministry of Bebe Winans is celebrated worldwide, his ascent to global stardom began with one of the most influential partnerships in music history. Alongside his sister CeCe, he formed a gospel powerhouse duo that not only dominated Christian music but also shattered barriers, carrying the message of faith to the top of the mainstream charts with a sound that was fresh, soulful, and undeniably anointed.
From PTL Singers to Global Superstars
Their journey to the global stage began in a place of ministry. Discovered by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, BeBe and CeCe Winans first gained national attention as background vocalists on the popular television program, The PTL Club. Their extraordinary talent quickly moved them from the background to the spotlight, where their featured performances captivated audiences. This powerful platform served as a divine launching pad, leading to their signing with the prestigious Sparrow Records and the beginning of a historic recording career.
Chart-Topping Hits That Redefined Gospel
With their debut album in 1987, BeBe & CeCe began a triumphant run of success. Their music was a masterful fusion of smooth R&B, contemporary pop, and heartfelt gospel, creating a sound that was both spiritually uplifting and commercially irresistible. Their landmark 1988 album, Heaven, became a certified Gold record, a rare feat for a gospel project at the time. Their catalog is filled with timeless classics that became anthems of faith and love, including:
- “Addictive Love” – A soulful ballad that hit #1 on the Billboard R&B charts.
- “I’ll Take You There” – A celebrated cover of the Staple Singers hit that brought their sound to an even wider audience.
- “Lost Without You” – A Grammy-winning declaration of dependence on God.
Their exceptional work was consistently honored by the industry, earning them multiple Grammy Awards, Dove Awards, and Stellar Awards throughout their incredible run as a duo.
The Sound That Crossed Over
What made BeBe & CeCe Winans truly revolutionary was their ability to bridge the gap between two worlds. Their songs received heavy rotation on both Christian and secular radio stations, a testament to their universal appeal. This crossover power was solidified through their powerful collaborations, most notably with their close friend, the legendary Whitney Houston. This extraordinary ability to connect with diverse audiences is a key part of the legacy of Bebe Winans, whose influential musical and literary work continues to be studied and celebrated. By breaking down these musical and cultural barriers, they paved the way for future generations of gospel artists to reach mainstream success without compromising their message.
A Voice of His Own: The Solo Journey and Artistic Evolution
After years of historic success as part of the iconic duo BeBe & CeCe, the time came for a new chapter in the ministry of Bebe Winans. This solo journey allowed him to explore new dimensions of his voice and songwriting, further cementing his status as a gospel legend with a message that could stand powerfully on its own.
Launching a Successful Solo Career
In a triumphant debut, Winans released his self-titled solo album in 1997. The project was an immediate success, showcasing his unique identity as a solo artist with a distinct blend of R&B and inspirational gospel. The album’s impact was felt globally, especially with the chart-topping single ‘I Wanna Be the Only One’, a collaboration with British group Eternal that became a massive UK No. 1 hit. This venture proved his individual star power, adding to the incredible list of awards and accolades he had already earned and establishing a new, celebrated era in his career.
Exploring New Sounds and Collaborations
Never one to remain creatively static, Winans continued to evolve his sound with subsequent albums. Projects like Love & Freedom (2000) saw him lean further into contemporary R&B, while the extraordinary 2005 album Cherch was a heartfelt return to traditional hymns and worship. His versatility shone through in his collaborations with a diverse range of artists, from gospel powerhouses to mainstream icons like Stevie Wonder and Brian McKnight. This ability to bridge genres demonstrated his universal appeal and his gift for finding faith-filled messages in every style of music.
Broadway and Beyond: Expanding the Ministry
The ministry of Bebe Winans soon found a home on new and unexpected stages. He took his talents to Broadway, delivering a memorable performance as Harpo in the hit musical The Color Purple. Taking his storytelling to the next level, he later co-wrote and starred in his own autobiographical musical, Born for This. This critically acclaimed production shared his and CeCe’s journey to stardom, offering an intimate look at their faith and family. Through these ventures, he masterfully used theater to share his powerful testimony, proving that his ministry knows no bounds.

More Than Music: The Man Behind the Ministry

His life is a powerful testament to faith in action, extending far beyond the stage and into the hearts of those he reaches through various platforms. His journey showcases a man committed not just to creating music, but to living a life of purpose and praise.

Beyond the Walls: Bishop Hezekiah Walker Expands Ministry with $80 Million Affordable Housing Development
Walker is officially expanding his ministry into real estate and community development with the near-completion of HezHouse Apartments, a massive $80 million, 10-story affordable housing development in East New York, Brooklyn.
By Gospel Newsroom powered by iPraiseRadio.com
BROOKLYN, NY — For decades, Bishop Hezekiah Walker has been a towering figure in Gospel music, his anthems echoing through churches, family reunions, and moments of triumph worldwide. But today, the Grammy Award-winning artist and senior pastor of Love Fellowship Tabernacle is making headlines for a different kind of legacy—one built with bricks, mortar, and a profound commitment to his community.
Walker is officially expanding his ministry into real estate and community development with the near-completion of HezHouse Apartments, a massive $80 million, 10-story affordable housing development in East New York, Brooklyn.

A Vision Born in Prayer
The journey to HezHouse Apartments began over a decade ago. In 2011, Walker and his congregation were preparing to build a massive 2,000-seat church on a vacant property they had purchased on Pacific Street in 1998. However, a moment of divine intervention changed the course of the project.
“While I was in prayer, I heard God telling me not to build a church, but to build something that would benefit the people in the community,” Walker shared.
Shortly after, developers approached him about the pressing need for affordable housing in the area. Recognizing the shifting landscape of modern ministry—especially in a post-pandemic world where online church attendance has surged—Walker pivoted. When he presented the idea of building housing instead of a mega-church to his congregation, they responded with a standing ovation.
“They were like, ‘Yes, let’s do something for the community. Let’s leave a legacy,'” Walker recalled.
Inside HezHouse Apartments
To bring this vision to life, Walker founded the Hezekiah Walker Community Development Corporation in 2013. Now, after years of navigating city approvals, financing, and development hurdles, the vision is a reality.
HezHouse Apartments will provide 236 affordable housing units to the East New York and Brownsville border. The building is thoughtfully designed to accommodate families of all sizes, featuring:
- 63 studios
- 72 one-bedroom units
- 73 two-bedroom units
- 28 three-bedroom units
What truly sets HezHouse apart is its commitment to the most vulnerable. The development includes 142 supportive housing units specifically designed for individuals and families dealing with serious mental health challenges or substance use disorders. Of those, 93 are designated as deeply affordable units, ensuring safe, stable housing for those who need it most.
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Despite the massive scale of the $80 million project, Walker ensured that the church retained its roots in the community. While the city attempted to buy the land outright during negotiations, Walker refused.
“You can build the building, but the land will always be ours,” he stated. “We leased the land for 99 years. That’s what legacy is all about. We leave it for those that are behind us.”
The development also features commercial space on the ground floor. While the final use is still being determined, Walker is leaning toward creating an adult daycare center to support seniors whose families work during the day.
As residents prepare to move into HezHouse Apartments this spring, Bishop Walker’s project stands as a powerful testament to what modern ministry can look like.
“I really want to leave a legacy above and beyond music,” Walker said. “I want to be able to say to people and show people that Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Choir was not just out here singing for money and popularity, we were singing to invest in our community.”
By stepping beyond the four walls of the church, Bishop Hezekiah Walker is proving that the hands and feet of Jesus can look a lot like a safe, affordable place to call home.
