From “This Is How We Do It” to “This Is How We Cure It”: Montell Jordan’s Triumphant Battle Against Prostate Cancer
Singer Turns Pain Into Purpose, Celebrating Victory and Launching Major Advocacy Initiative in 2026
R&B legend Montell Jordan, the voice behind the timeless 90s anthem “This Is How We Do It,” is singing a new song in 2026—one of triumph, faith, and healing. After a grueling two-year battle with prostate cancer that tested his strength and deepened his faith, the 56-year-old singer and pastor is now cancer-free and using his platform to save lives.
A Journey Nobody Expected
Jordan’s medical odyssey began in early 2024 when routine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings revealed elevated levels. What followed was a diagnosis that would change his life: Stage 1 prostate cancer.
“I always imagined I would be telling my prostate cancer story from the other side of prostate cancer,” Jordan shared with TODAY.com. The initial diagnosis was upgraded to Stage 2 after further testing, revealing a more aggressive form of the disease.
In late 2024, Jordan underwent a radical prostatectomy, having his entire prostate removed. The surgery was so successful that just two weeks later, he felt well enough to perform at a concert in Anaheim with Usher. Doctors gave him clear margins, and he thought his cancer battle was over.
But God had different plans.

When Cancer Came Back
In September 2025, nearly a year after his prostatectomy, Jordan received devastating news during a routine nine-month checkup: the cancer had returned, this time in his lymph nodes.
“Close to a year post-prostatectomy, I still need to go back and have additional treatments because it’s been detected that there is still cancer,” Jordan explained.
The recurrence required a new battle plan: 37 sessions of targeted proton radiation therapy combined with hormone-blocking treatments to stop the cancer’s growth. Jordan would become a two-time cancer survivor—a title he never imagined claiming.
“I didn’t know there was such a thing as being a two-time cancer survivor, but that’s the journey that I’m on right now,” he said with characteristic grace.
The Greatest Christmas Gift
On Christmas Day 2025, Jordan received what he called “the greatest Christmas gift” he could have ever gotten. His doctors called with news that brought him to tears of joy: he was officially undetected and cancer-free again.
“My doctors called me on yesterday morning to let me know that I am undetected now,” Jordan shared in an emotional Instagram video posted December 26. “I got the best gift I could have ever gotten”.
The moment marked the end of a two-year journey that Jordan described as one that tested every fiber of his being—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
“For two years that was not the case. And so I’m just super, super grateful,” he reflected.
Faith, Family, and Fighting Forward
Throughout his battle, Jordan leaned heavily on his faith, crediting prayer, medical care, and unwavering support from loved ones as key factors in his recovery. As a pastor, he approached his diagnosis not just as a personal trial but as a testimony in the making.
“I’m on a journey that I gotta be faster than cancer. I gotta run ahead of it,” Jordan declared, embodying a proactive mindset that combines faith with action.
His approach went beyond just personal survival. Jordan wanted to document his journey to help others facing similar battles, especially in the Black community where prostate cancer strikes hardest.
Turning Pain Into Purpose: 2026 and Beyond
As Jordan steps into 2026 cancer-free, he’s not slowing down—he’s speeding up with a mission to save lives.
“SUSTAIN” Documentary
Jordan has been filming his entire cancer journey for a documentary titled “SUSTAIN,” which is set to debut in 2026. The film captures everything from his initial diagnosis through both battles with cancer, offering an intimate, unfiltered look at what it means to face mortality while maintaining faith.
“I am now a 2x cancer survivor. This has been a two-year journey that we have lived and simultaneously documented for a film called ‘SUSTAIN,'” Jordan wrote on Instagram.
He describes the documentary as potentially “one of the greatest contributions I have made to humanity”—a resource for families navigating difficult conversations and decisions that he wished he had when first diagnosed.
Partnership with ZERO Prostate Cancer
Jordan has joined forces with ZERO Prostate Cancer as a Global Ambassador, working to address a critical health crisis in the Black community. Together, they’ve launched an ambitious initiative to screen over 100,000 men—especially Black men—and destigmatize medical care.
The statistics are sobering: one in every eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 70% of those men are African American. Yet prostate cancer is 99% treatable when caught early.
“If I’m not getting checked, basically I’m playing Russian Roulette with my life,” Jordan warned.
“This Is How We Cure It” Tour
In a poignant full-circle moment, Jordan is planning a 30-city tour for 2026 titled “This Is How We Cure It”—a powerful play on his signature hit that celebrates 30 years of his music while advancing ZERO’s mission.
The tour will combine concerts with documentary screenings and on-site health screenings, creating a festival of hope and healing in cities across America. It’s music with a mission: to catch cancer early and save lives.
NFL Partnership
Jordan is also partnering with ZERO Prostate Cancer to “blitz the barriers” by encouraging NFL players to get screened for early detection, backed by the support of the women, children, and other relatives in their lives.
A Message of Hope and Urgency
Jordan’s message to men—particularly Black men—is clear and urgent: end the stigma around prostate health conversations and get screened regularly.
“From the very first diagnosis, I never felt anything that was what the world depicts cancer is supposed to look like,” Jordan shared. “But a lot of times, early on, cancer doesn’t have a face. Death doesn’t look like death and that’s what cancer strives to be”.
He emphasized that early detection through routine checkups is often the difference between life and death. “Your life is worth more than what a stigma presents or what a taboo presents. I need you guys to get checked,” he urged.
Jordan’s transparency about navigating treatments, from the difficult recovery period with catheters and adjusting to life without a prostate to the mental and emotional toll of recurrence, provides a roadmap for others walking similar paths.
Living in Victory
As 2026 unfolds, Montell Jordan stands as a powerful testament to the combination of faith, early detection, quality medical care, and community support. His triumph over cancer adds a profound new chapter to his legacy—one that extends far beyond entertainment into the realm of life-saving advocacy.
“I’m fully confident that God is my healer,” Jordan declared. “I also know that I have the greatest of care professionals and people alongside of me to make sure that we are completely cancer free”.
His story reminds us that strength isn’t only found on stage or in the studio, but in perseverance during life’s most difficult moments. And while “This Is How We Do It” defined a generation’s soundtrack, “This Is How We Cure It” may define his lasting legacy—one that helps save thousands of lives.

Gospel Legend Fred Hammond Shares Update on “Steady” Recovery Following Series of Major Surgeries
(Gospel Newsroom, powered by iPraiseRadio.com) – Gospel music icon Fred Hammond is continuing his journey toward full health, sharing a message of resilience and faith after navigating a challenging season of medical procedures and physical setbacks over the past two years.

In a recent update to his supporters in February 2026, Hammond described his progress as “recovering steady”, a praise-worthy milestone following a gauntlet of health battles that began in early 2024.
A Season of Physical Challenges The award-winning artist’s health journey intensified in January 2024 when he underwent a double knee replacement surgery. The procedure carried heavy emotional weight for Hammond, who revealed that his own father had passed away from complications following the same surgery decades prior.
While recovering from the knee procedures, Hammond faced another setback on June 27, 2024, when he suffered a severe fall while attending a funeral service. The incident complicated his rehabilitation, leaving him reliant on a wheelchair and walkers for a season—an experience he described as one of the most “physically and emotionally taxing” of his life.
“I’ve been to the army, boot camp, jumped out of airplanes… but having to be in a wheelchair and learning to walk again has been the most taxing experience,” Hammond shared regarding the rehabilitation process.
Turning a Corner The road to recovery continued into 2025. In April of that year, Hammond underwent an arthroscopy and a right total hip replacement. By the summer of 2025, he marked the one-year anniversary of his fall, candidly admitting he was about “50% recovered” at that time but was grateful to be on the mend.
Following the hip procedure, Hammond reported significant improvements, noting he was “walking much better with no pain”.
Faith Through the Fire Throughout this ordeal, Hammond has remained open about the humility required to accept help from family, friends, and even strangers during his most immobile moments. He has credited his faith for sustaining him when simple tasks became overwhelming battles.
As of early 2026, Hammond’s latest updates suggest a spirit of gratitude as he continues to regain his strength. His testimony of endurance serves as a powerful reminder to his fans worldwide that even in the valley of physical affliction, God remains a keeper.

Love Wins: A New Chapter for Gospel Legend After 16 Years
In a joyful announcement that has inspired the gospel community worldwide, BET Award-winning gospel artist and pastor Marvin Sapp revealed his engagement to Dr. La’Boris Cole on February 23, 2026. The heartfelt proposal marks a beautiful new chapter for the beloved singer, 16 years after the passing of his late wife, MaLinda Prince Sapp.

A Family Affair: Children Orchestrate Surprise Proposal
The engagement celebration was a touching family moment, orchestrated by Sapp’s adult children who planned an elaborate surprise. What appeared to be a birthday party transformed into an unforgettable proposal when Sapp dropped to one knee, surrounded by both families, and presented Dr. Cole with a stunning diamond engagement ring.
“In 2026, God has given Marvin Sapp the desire of his heart!” the announcement proclaimed.
The moment was both intimate and celebratory, with family members and close friends witnessing the emotional milestone that represents not just a union of two hearts, but the blending of two purpose-driven lives committed to ministry and service.
From Friendship to Forever: A Decade-Long Journey
Sapp and Dr. Cole’s relationship is rooted in a deep friendship that spans more than 10 years. The couple intentionally kept their romantic courtship private, choosing to move forward only when they were confident about their relationship’s direction. This deliberate approach reflects the wisdom and maturity both bring to their union, having walked through significant life experiences that have shaped their faith and character.
Meet Dr. La’Boris Cole: A Visionary Leader in Ministry and Mental Health
Dr. La’Boris Cole is far more than just the future Mrs. Sapp—she is an accomplished clinician, ministry leader, and visionary in her own right. A Mississippi native, Dr. Cole holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Mississippi College and a doctoral degree in Clinical Counseling from Trevecca Nazarene University.
Her professional accomplishments include:
- Founder and Executive Director of the Born 2 Danz Worship Arts Conference, an internationally recognized ministry and arts platform
- Founder and CEO of Cole Associates & Counselors of Texas, a multi-site behavioral health practice
- Respected therapist and visionary leader whose work bridges ministry, mental health, leadership, and the arts
Dr. Cole’s mission centers on helping people recognize their worth, heal completely, and live fully in their purpose—a calling that beautifully aligns with Sapp’s own ministry.
A Journey of Faith: Honoring the Past While Embracing the Future
Marvin Sapp has been remarkably transparent about his journey as a widower following the 2010 passing of his wife, MaLinda Prince Sapp, who died after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Together, they shared three children—Madisson, Mikaila, and Marvin Jr.
For 16 years, Sapp devoted himself to single parenthood, dedicating his energy to raising his children while balancing an extraordinary career in ministry and music. He has been open about his desire to love again, especially as his children reached adulthood, married, and began families of their own.
Today, Sapp’s two eldest children are married with children of their own, and friends say he only began dating seriously again once his family reached stability. This patience and prioritization of his children demonstrates the depth of character that has defined Sapp’s life and ministry.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
Marvin Sapp remains one of gospel music’s most influential voices and respected spiritual leaders. The voice behind the crossover gospel anthem “Never Would Have Made It,” Sapp serves as senior pastor of The Chosen Vessel Church in Fort Worth, Texas. His musical legacy includes:
- 16 studio albums with over a billion streams
- BET Awards recognition
- Induction into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame
- A 2022 TV One biopic inspired by the impact of “Never Would Have Made It”
- Radio show host and author
Beyond music, Sapp describes himself first and foremost as “a preacher gifted to sing” rather than a singer who preaches—a distinction that reveals where his heart truly lies.
Looking Ahead: A Season of Joy and Purpose
While no wedding date has been announced yet, the gospel community is already celebrating this beautiful union. The engagement represents more than a personal milestone—it’s a testament to the power of faith, patience, and God’s perfect timing.
For Sapp, who has ministered to millions about overcoming life’s challenges through faith, this season represents the fulfillment of a deeply personal prayer. His journey from grief to joy, from single parenthood to this new partnership, offers hope to countless others walking similar paths.
Dr. Cole and Bishop Sapp’s union brings together two powerful ministries—gospel music and worship arts, pastoral leadership and mental health counseling, preaching and therapeutic healing. Their combined influence promises to impact lives in profound ways, both within the Church and in the broader community.
Community Response
The announcement has generated an outpouring of love and congratulations from the gospel music community and beyond. Social media platforms have been flooded with well-wishes, with many celebrating not just the engagement, but the inspiring example of faith, patience, and God’s restoration.
Gospel Music Association, TV One, and numerous gospel radio stations have featured the announcement, with the broader faith community rejoicing in this testimony of hope.

A Word from The Rose
In characteristic fashion, Dr. Cole has turned her season of recovery into a moment of ministry, reminding her followers about the importance of rest, family support, and trusting God through every season of life.
“Allow me to be human,” she wrote—a simple but profound statement that reminds us all that even our spiritual giants need grace, rest, and the space to heal .
As Psalm 30:2-3 declares: “O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me. O Lord, You brought my soul up from the grave; You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.”
Dr. Dorinda Clark-Cole is living proof of this scripture, and her upcoming return to the stage will be a celebration not just of her healing, but of God’s faithfulness to sustain, restore, and renew those who trust in Him.
